A systematic approach to devising & evaluating community programs

Enabling Change social marketing workshops are based on a series of planning tools which are taken away by participants to be used as part of their routine planning activities.

Note: Participants are encouraged to develop or fine tune real plans for imminent projects during the workshops. This is a unique opportunity to build innovative, rigorus strategies in an enjoyable, collaborative atmosphere.

Day 1: Lenses to understand social change

Excerpts from the Enabling Change Toolkit

We explore what makes voluntary change happen, and examine key concepts and models of social change - illustrated with numerous examples from social marketing programs in Australia and overseas. The Day 1 topics are:

  • Awareness vs action programs
  • Reflecting on change in our lives
  • The Seven Doors model
  • The Diffusion of Innovations
  • Refining your innovation
  • Working with norms
  • Working with values
  • Comfy zones
  • Commitments and pledges

The outcome from Day 1 is a rounded insight into the processes of social change.

Day 2: The program design cycle

(using the Progam Design and Evaluation Workbook)

This is a system of program logic designed to deal with social change projects. Participants work in teams to develop a program framework to tackle their own 'change challenges'. The Day 2 topics are:

  • The step-by-step process
  • Developing an ‘inclusive purpose’
  • Addressing audience barriers
  • Your primary action objective - is it measurable?
  • Your primary audience - is it reachable?
  • Do the benefits address your audience's dissatisfactions?
  • Your intervention
  • The four kinds of interventions
  • Reality testing
  • Evaluation - simple tools to match outcomes with evidence
  • Focus group role play
  • Bringing it together in a written strategy
  • Messages - the good, the bad and the ugly
  • Messages - the message matrix
  • Designing an integrated campaign - the action matrix
  • Pre-testing
  • Action learning

The Day 2 outcome is your own customised program design and evaluation strategy, targeting your particular real-world 'change challenge'. It addresses audience action, encourages critical thought and enables costeffective evaluation.
