Les Robinson, Environmental Consultant

Background

Les is a communication and behaviour change specialist who is well known for his work with Social Change Media in Sydney.

Les has spent over 10 years creating and implementing social marketing and education programs for government agencies, councils, business and community organisations. Environmental education, in particular, has been a strong focus, and Les has led the development influential studies, campaigns and communication products in this field.

Les is a highly-regarded expert in:

  • devising targeted change strategies, especially in the environmental and health promotion fields;

  • designing multi-faceted communication programs, campaigns and packages;

  • facilitation of community participation and consultation projects.

Seven Doors Approach

To design effective change programs Les refined his "Seven Doors" approach over several years. This is a program planning tool which focuses on overcoming the barriers to social change and enabling audiences to achieve their own aspirations towards healthy, safe and sustainable futures.

The 'Seven Doors' approach forms part of the underlying theory in the Enabling Change course, an intensive two-day training program for those who need to develop and manage behaviour change programs in fields like sustainability, natural resource management, health promotion, road safety and emergency management.

Recent Projects

Some of Les' recent work with SCM includes:
  • strategic advice in developing Ma'feesh cigara men gheir khosara (No cigarette without loss) social marketing campaign for the Sydney South West Area Health Service.
  • the FloodSafe Communities Program for the NSW State Emergency Service

  • the EcoSmart business network strategy for Illawarra Waste Management

  • the EcoLiving program for Resource NSW;

  • the Salt Pan Creek stormwater education program for Canterbury, Bankstown and Hurstville Councils

Les also developed and promoted the concept for the RiverKeeper program on behalf of the Georges River Combined Councils Committee. The program is won the $10,000 Word on the Environment award from 2Day FM Radio.

Les is the author of Field Guide to the Native Plants of Sydney,Making Reader Friendly Publications, and co-author of Winning Back the Cities (with Peter Newman and Geoff Kenworthy). His Open Your Council and Working the Media are available through New Citizen Books.
