In the main, it is the producer who makes the decisions about the stories and interviews for the day.Specialist mediaThrow your net wide. Don't restrict yourself to the main media. Target the specialist press too. Every organisation has a newsletter and somewhere you will find a list of all those newsletter. Make good use of it. Some events may not interest the general media, but you could get a good run in the specialist press.
